Lid were frequently altered when new plates were engraved or colour mixes altered producing variations, but by far the easiest way of altering the appearance of a lid, was to add and extra border. This gives the more discerning collector the opportunity to create an even more comprehensive collection. You cannot fail to appreciate how the extra borders enhance the beauty, yet their sole intention was to facilitate the design being used on a larger lid, so accommodating the provision of more contents. The inclusion of the address also helps date some lids and although these four carry the address of 119 & 120 Bishopgate Street, early examples are seen with only 119, whilst later ones carry only 120, suggesting the firm were down sizing.
